A visit to Vail isn't complete without a Swiss hot dog
|
The Swiss Hot Dog was invented in the kitchen of the Blue Cow by Ernst and Barbara. It quickly became a menu favorite, so they decided to open The Swiss Hot Dog in the heart of Vail. The Swiss Hot Dog became the most unique little fast food joint in town. Ernst became known by his thick German accent and worldly stories about his French Foreign Legion days in Northern Africa as well as his time running the well known Sundek Hotel at Perisher ski resort in the Snowy Mountain range of Australia. Today, The Swiss Hot Dog has been relocated to Avon after Vail was rebuilt, but after more than 40 years in business there's no ignoring the addicted cult followers of the SHD. You can still find Ernst working 7 days a week alongside his daughter, Simone. Though the Larese family has had many interested buyers, they have decided to keep it in the family to preserve its unique history based on the American Dream, Ernst's uniquely colorful stories, and appreciation of its followers. If you find yourself in Vail in summer, seek out The Swiss Hot Dog at the Vail Farmers' Market, in the heart of Vail or at our location in Avon. |
