Vail Pass Climb
Each year thousands of cyclists hit Colorado's terrain to be tested on legendary climbs in the mountains or ride leisurely through the plains and valleys. Around the Valley, the same terrain ridden every day by local cyclists will once again be taken to by cycling's biggest names in one of cyclings biggest races, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

Join former professional cyclist Michael Carter, five-time Paralympic cycling national champion Jonathan Copsey, and Ride the Rockies Tour Director Chandler Smith in the lead up to the USA Pro Challenge to hear about how multi-day racing has gone from the legendary Coors Classic and Red Zinger to the now premiere and iconic USA Pro Challenge.

Carter, Copsey and Smith will share stories about racing around the world, and detail what everyone should look forward to when the USA Pro Challenge comes through town this August.

Carter will share his stories from racing in Colorado and Europe, and detail what everyone should look forward to when the USA Pro Challenge comes through town this August.

About Michael Carter

qinghai lake 2003Michael was born and raised in Colorado and started his cycling career while in college at Colorado State University. He quickly rose through the ranks of cycling, landing a slot on the very first ever, U.S. Professional Cycling Team to compete in Europe – that was in 1984. That year, that first U.S. Pro Cycling Team, the "Philadelphia Lasers" sponsored by former Giro D'Italia winner Gianni Motta, fielded a very young and inexperienced team of Americans, Michael included, but all finished!

The Giro D'Italia transformed Michael's life and while he took time to complete a degree in Exercise Physiology at the University Of Colorado, Boulder, then went on to become a Naval Officer, he returned back to cycling and competed as a professional in Europe until 1993. Michael raced in the 1985, 1986 and 1988 "Coor's Classic" as well.

After a broken back and pelvis sustained while training for the 2003 World Championships, Michael took six years off from racing, only to return a professional, racing mostly in Asia until 2005.

In 1994, Michael founded Echelon Sports Performance, a cycling training, coaching and tour company that he still runs today. Among other accomplishments, Michael has been a certified USA Cycling "Elite" Level Coach and worked with the U.S. National Team as a Head Coach, worked as a "Diretor Sportif" for professional cycling teams from 2007 to 2012.

Michael is still running Echelon Sports today and is also working for Medalist Sports, the company the produces the US Pro Challenge, as a Team Liaison and assists in VIP Guest Services.

Michaels other accomplishments include a ranking of #1 US PRO 1990, raced all three "Grand Tours," Tour De France, Giro D'Italia, and Vuelta Espagna, 5 Times U.S. World Road Race Championship Team member, 2009 RADWELT World Champion, four-time World Master's Hill Climb Champion and a former National Champion, and has multiple Colorado State Championship titles.
